Russ Tompkins

Interim Director of FaithWorks Pantry and Local Missions

My role at FaithWestwood

My ministry supports people facing challenges throughout the community. Our FaithWorks Pantry distributes food twice a month and at other special times of the year. The Local Missions group lends a hand to various community groups including our partner church, Iglesia Comunitaria. We also partner with our neighbors at Central Middle School and with the city of Omaha in upkeep of Oaks Park near the church. Our newest focus is our partnership program with Restoring Dignity where we help connect refugees looking for a new start with people who have furniture to donate.

My background in faith

As long as I can recall I have been involved in the church. I attended Sunday School and worship every Sunday singing in the Chancel Choir as a sixth grader. I was involved in Boy Scouts through the church attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. While attending Confirmation at York First United Methodist Church, I felt the calling of God to pastoral ministry. I took some side trips but finally answered the call to ministry at age 35 when I quit my career as a teacher and attended seminary. After graduation from seminary, I spent over 28 years in full time pastoral ministry until I retired in 2019.

Why I love our church

The past year at Faith Westwood has been a joy because of the generous hearts of the congregation. Connie and I have met so many people who have a heart for ministry and for each other. It is the love of Christ that shines in the lives of so many people at FaithWestwood that is the reason I consider it a joy to serve the church in a part time capacity. Connie and I have a spiritual and friendly relationship with Pastor Steve and Tricia that spans many years as well.

A bit about me

Connie and I have been married since 1978 and live in Omaha with our four dogs who are our substitute grandchildren for now. Connie retired from teaching elementary music in 2016 and I decided to join her in retirement three years later. We enjoy attending Husker sporting events and being with our two sons, Matt and wife Wendy, and Ben. We have connected with folks in a small group at the church and in music ministry. I also teach part time at a few colleges to bring in some extra income as well as help with the worship services at the church.
